Overview

Set amongst the middle Atlas, the Ahansal is one of the most scenic spots we have ever been kayaking and it presents a perfect opportunity to learn to kayak. People often see our safety kayakers on trips and think “wow, that looks cool” and think how they too would love to learn how to kayak… but preferably in a warm climate! This is an opportunity to learn a great new skill from some of the best kayakers in the world on a stunning and relaxed river, and with beautiful weather to top it all. Experience the adrenaline rush when you take on your first white water sucessfully… what a buzz. And on your last 2 days through a stunning, steep sided gorge where you will experience a tranquility you’ll never find anywhere else as you look up to the deep blue sky… you and your boat now in perfect unison. And when you reach the lake, Bin El Ouidane, quiet reflection on your personal achievement as you sit back and take in the scenery in all it’s splendour. This is a trip for those wanting something more than just a holiday.

What you will be up to

You’ll arrive into Marrakech and be met by your Trip Leader. He’ll take you to your centrally located hotel and enjoy dinner together.

Not included: Breakfast, Lunch and dinner

Gorgeous drive to the heart of the Atlas mountains. Views are stunning and we camp at Bin El Ouidane, outfit our kayaks, teach you some basic paddle strokes on the flat water and enjoy an evening paddle!

We take to the warm lake for more practice on your basic strokes and learn new ones, and to start on the Eskimo Roll! We drive in the afternoon, into the mountains to our gorgeous first night’s camp beside the river!

We spend the morning on the river practicing support strokes, catching “eddies” and eskimo roll practice. The afternoon is spent at leisure, going for a walk and taking in the amazing scenery!

It will be a short day today as we practice stopping and “eddying out!” Crystal clear water, try your hand at fishing.

We paddle through Tilouguite. A gorgeous village, with local children taking the chance to “hitchhike” down river with us. We camp amongst cedar trees for the evening.

The rapids on this river are not large, but instead are perfect for learning, with small wave trains and lots of rocks and “eddies” to practice stopping in!

Today sees more roller coaster rapids, plus the twists and turns of a stunning gorge. We kayak little more than 4-5 hours per day, leaving plenty of time to go and explore nearby villages, or just sit around with your fellow kayakers and discuss the day! We light a fire tonight and watch the gorgeous glow in the canyon walls.

A few fun rapids until the river opens up into the lake and we get picked up by motor boat and taxied across this beautiful lake. A great chance to sample a beer or 2 and revel in your achievement. We enjoy a night at a gorgeous hotel overlooking Bin El Ouidane where we’ll have a wonderful celebratory meal together.

After breakfast we’ll depart for Marrakech where you’ll have a day exploring Marrakech and exploiting your credit card! Truly a great fun place!

Flights To Marrakech, Morocco

We suggest that all of our clients from the UK and Europe check out the best deals on Skyscanner which will list all options from your nearest airport. Many “low cost” airlines such as Easyjet have excellent options from London, Edinburgh and Manchester and Ryanair from other airports in the UK. Scheduled flights can be taken with Royal Air Maroc from North America into Casablanca and then connecting flights through to Marrakech. Please note to fly in on Day 1 as listed below (anytime) and depart on the last day (anytime). We can of course organise extra nights for you if that gives you cheaper flight options. What you should bring

We find most of our clients have in their posession already what is needed for a river journey. We have broken down here the items into what you’ll need on the river and in camp. An equipment list of what you will require for your adventure will be sent to you prior to your departure.

River Wear:

A pair of Chacos / Keens or similar sandals. (Sandals with a closed toe are ideal) Trainers are also ok.
A pair of river shorts (longer leg length) shorts can be purchased from our online Water Shop.
A Swimming costume or bikini for ladies.
A set of thermal long sleeved top and bottoms to wear under your personal flotation device. Merino wool polypropylene or capilene is the best, not cotton.
A baseball cap for under the helmet to keep sun off – can be purchased from our online Water Shop.
Sunglasses.
Chums for fastening your sunglasses to your head – can be purchased on line or from your river crew.
1 Litre Nalgene / Sigg or similar water bottle.
Carabiner for fastening water bottle to your boat.
Waterproof camera such as GoPro for the ‘action’ shots
Waterproof sunscreen and lip balm SPF30 minimum.

Around Camp:

Neutral coloured long trousers.
Tops – long sleeved shirt or t shirts.
Fleece jumper / sweatshirt.
Light weight down jacket.
Shorts.
Sarong or long skirt for ladies to cover your legs whilst in the company of locals.
Wide brimmed sun hat. Thin scarf or buff for the Sahara to keep sand off your face.
Woolly hat and gloves.
Underwear & socks
A 3-season sleeping bag (Can be hired in advance)
Travel Pillow.
Light weight down jacket.
Shoes or boots for wearing around camp.
Thermal top and bottoms. (Good to sleep in)

You do not need to bring tents or sleeping mats.

We provide personal flotation jackets, leg floats, spray jackets, helmets and wetsuits and booties – but make sure that we have your weight, height and shoe size for wetsuit sizing.

Personal items:

Glasses or Contact lenses. Disposable lenses are ideal.
Toiletries. Toothbrush, toothpaste, biodegradable soap and shampoo.
Forget the cosmetics and hair dryer! But we do suggest moisturizer.
Hand wipes and a small bottle of hand sanitiser.
Small pack towel.
Headlamp or head torch with spare batteries.
Any medication you may be taking.
Insect repellent.
Blister plasters.

Optional:

Your favourite book/kindle or a journal for recording your river memories.
Sketchpad.
Binoculars.
Photographic or video equipment. We recommend a cleaning kit as sand gets everywhere.
Spare memory card.
Solar or portable charger.
Zip lock bags to keep valuables dry and sand free.
Rehydration tablets (Phizz, Nuun and O.R.S are easily available)
The only money that you need to bring is for meals in town, souvenirs, DVD, personal items, gratuities and the beer kitty for the raft trip if you drink.
If you wish to pass on a gratuity to your guides we leave this entirely up to you.
