CMO and occasional deckhand

Melissa Talago

Where is home?

Originally it was Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Now it’s York, England.

When did you start sailing?

I learnt to sail from about the age of eight, the only girl in a male-dominated fleet of Optimists. I raced dinghies at a national level until the age of 18.

What sailing experience have you had since?

Besides numerous family sailing holidays in the Med and in Panama, I also took part in the Clipper Round the World Yacht race, sailing from Hull to Rio. What an amazing experience that was with 18 novice sailors on board a 67 foot yacht for six weeks!

What sailing qualifications do you have?

I have my Competent Crew, Yachtmaster Theory and Sea Survival certificates, plus well over 6000 nautical miles including many night sailing hours.

What do you love most about the Water By Nature sailing trips?

Honestly, getting on the helm and letting my inner dinghy racer come out! I also love to teach the guests – particularly those who have never sailed before – how to sail and watching their faces light up when they get the hang of it. But you can’t beat chilling on deck with a cold glass of wine, watching the sun set, exploring the quaint ports and eating delicious food. As a side gig, it’s pretty perfect!

CMO?

My background is in PR and marketing, although typically focused on the tech sector. I am lucky enough to work part time on building the Water By Nature brand and finding the stories that showcase how incredible these trips are.

Anything else?

I’m also Hamish’s better half. And I am definitely a better sailor (he will disagree on this point…)
